NEW Alumna Becomes Board Member

NEW is happy to welcome Allyson Jernagin, a NEW alumna to the board!

In 2007, as a NEW resident, Allyson’s case manager asked her what her goals were. First, she said, she wanted to reconnect with her family. Then get a job, and finally own a house.

Today Allyson has achieved all her goals.

“NEW gave me the foundation I was lacking in order to move out of homelessness and continue my recovery,” she said. “As a board member, I just want to be a part of NEW and help in any way I can and let the NEW women know that their situation isn’t where they have to end up. There’s always promise and hopefulness in tomorrow.”

Allyson will bring her skills as an accountant to the board, as well as a genuine love for the place that gave her a second chance. “I am so happy to be a part of continuing NEW’s mission,” she said.

It’s been a challenging time for all of us as we adjust our days, our budgets and our expectations to COVID-19. And now, add a city and country grasping for footing after the death of an unarmed black man by a white police officer and we all feel even more out of control, unstable, and concerned about the future. Here at NEW we know that one way we can process our own feelings is to think about the needs and feelings of others.

We need you. The women need you. Your community needs you. Now more than ever women and children in DC need a safe and stable place to live.
