O Christmas Tree!

new-christmas-treeWhat do the White House, the Big Apple and New Endeavors by Women have in common? This past week we all hosted our own Christmas Tree Lighting!

Although our lighting ceremony was not as high profile as Pennsylvania Avenue or Rockefeller Center, we think our tree shines just as bright. A beautiful tree stands tall in our lobby, greeting residents and guests alike with holiday cheer.

Our 7 foot lifelike tree, complete with all its decorations and lights, comes to us courtesy of Keys for the Homeless Foundation. Keys is a local organization that provides supplies and support to agencies that serve the homeless. We are proud to be a longtime Keys for the Homeless partner and the recipient of furniture, towels and linens, tableware, small appliances and toiletries, compliments of Keys and its donors from the hospitality industry.

Our lovely tree will not stand alone in the lobby for long. A growing collection of holiday cards from our supporters will surround the tree in coming weeks. And soon after, Santa will fill the space under our tree with gifts for our residents!

It’s been a challenging time for all of us as we adjust our days, our budgets and our expectations to COVID-19. And now, add a city and country grasping for footing after the death of an unarmed black man by a white police officer and we all feel even more out of control, unstable, and concerned about the future. Here at NEW we know that one way we can process our own feelings is to think about the needs and feelings of others.

We need you. The women need you. Your community needs you. Now more than ever women and children in DC need a safe and stable place to live.
