On any given night, 882 unaccompanied (single) women are experiencing homelessness in the District of Columbia. Think about it: in DC nearly 900 women will be alone, homeless, and often hopeless tonight while we sleep in our warm, cozy beds in our homes.

The words “remarkable” and “survivor” routinely apply to NEW alumna. Even so, Petrina Williams breaks the mold. Like many NEW alumna, Williams, now a NEW board member, has been through challenges that would fell the rest of us. Yet as she talks about her experiences with matter-of-fact honesty, she radiates happiness and a joy for living. For example, her outgoing voicemail message, where you can practically hear her smile, invites you to “Have a great day—on purpose!” No doubt, it is that upbeat attitude that has carried Williams through life. We know it doesn’t take much, and yet, we are always surprised how little separates us from the homeless—a job loss, medical bills, a bad marriage. It can happen to anyone of us. Then we get to know the people whose fortunes took a poor turn. And we realize they aren’t always troubled people who were already on thin ice. Read more
New Endeavors by Women recognizes the outstanding service of Board Chair, Anne Raffaelli, whose term comes to a close at the end of 2015, after 23 years.
As a non-profit organization, the work of our Board Members is incredibly valuable to the success of our organization. Eight fun and energetic volunteers from Bessemer Trust helped spearhead our second holiday decorating party at New Endeavors by Women’s N Street headquarters this past weekend. The Bessemer group brought cookies, decorations, crafts supplies and lots of good cheer to our residents and some of their children. Read more
